Summer is a great time to take a break from your art practice. But it’s also the time when you want to start applying for fall residencies. Artists never rest! To make your work a little easier, we’ve compiled a list of residencies that offer stipends or are free to attend. From a residency for culinary artists to one for community activists, there’s something for everyone!

Visual + Digital Arts Indigenous Residency
Sleeping Buffalo Mountain, Canada
Deadline: June 22, 2016
This residency is open to artists of indigenous decent in and outside of Canada. Located on the side of Sleeping Buffalo Mountain, the Centre’s campus rests upon a historic sacred gathering place for the Blackfoot, Stoney Nakoda, and Tsuu T’ina people, who met here for trade and knowledge sharing, visions, ceremony, and celebration. Continuing in this tradition, participants in the residency will have the opportunity to meet with local Elders, engage with faculty and visiting guest artists, and tap into the community of knowledge of their peers around contemporary Indigenous art practice.
Marfa Contemporary Residency
Marfa, Texas
Deadline: June 30, 2016
The Marfa Contemporary Artist in Residence program was instituted in 2012 with the aim of supporting the development of artists of diverse ages, backgrounds and disciplines. Artists involved in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, performance-related media and other fine art media are eligible to apply for a residence. Artists who are accepted to this two month residency will receive a $1,100 stipend per month.
Mongolian Contemporary Art Support Association
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Deadline: June 30, 2016
Mongolian Contemporary Art Support Association (MCASA) has launched an international call for the engagement of a curator and an artist. The NOMAD SPIRIT project aims to raise public awareness on potential threats to vital environmental and cultural resources in rural areas of Mongolia, caused by mining activities. The selected curator and artists will are expected to travel to the environmentally damaged area and collaborate with local nomadic community on concept development. Performance must be held on the site and documented by the selected Mongolian artists. Video and photos of live performances will be exhibited in Ulaanbaatar for a month.
L’atelier sur Seine
Île-de-France, France
Deadline: July 1, 2016
L’Atelier sur Seine offers a unique opportunity for visual artists to live in a French region known for its long artistic past and work in a historical artist studio overlooking the Seine river. The aim of this program is to encourage artist residents to find inspiration and make progress on their work within the walls of the studio. The residency is offered at no charge to the artist!
La Fragua Culinary Residency
Belalcazar, Spain
Deadline: July 1, 2016
This residency is great for artists who use food and edible materials in their art practice. : Through an international open call the CULTO CULINARIA scholarship will invite one culinary artist for a 1 month residency at La Fragua in August of 2016. With hands on production and research support by the team, the selected artist will have the chance to investigate the region in depth, while unearthing all that is growing and breathing in our radius. The residency includes full travel stipend and a €500 artist fee.
MarinMOCA Artist in Residence
Novato, California
Deadline: July 2, 2016
For Bay Area artists only. The MarinMOCA residency aims to provide a talented and committed visual artist with a stipend and free studio space at the Novato Art Center surrounded by 50 other artists as well as MarinMOCA’s galleries and classroom. The artist will have the opportunity to concentrate on making their art while giving the community opportunities to connect and learn from his/her art practice and knowledge. The residency offers $2,800 as a stipend, as well as a gift certificate to a nearby restaurant.

This two-week residency is perfect for community engaged and activist artists. The call proposes a 15 day residence process, where 8 artists will work together 
with the people of Cazón, to think and put into action, through art tools, possible ways to inhabit an economic system based on cooperation, recognition of individual and collective needs, the upgrading of the own and collective knowledge, and different ways to share, exchange and add value to the resources we can offer to the community.
NPAF Gettsyburg National Military Park
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Deadline: July 10, 2016
The National Park Arts Foundation offers artists space across the US to continue their practice in unique settings. This one-month residency is situated in an idyllic Pennsylvania pastoral setting that is starkly evocative of the living history of the bitterest American conflict, but also a potent symbol of reconciliation. The residency includes a $1,000 stipend.
