To quote our favorite teen boyband (and accompanying meme)—guess what: it’s gonna be May. If you’ve been waiting all spring to get yourself together and apply for that one residency (or grant, or open call)—now’s a pretty good time. If your a visual artists or a writer, this coming month is filled with exciting international opportunities to either work in isolated and inspiring spaces or incubate within an community. We’ve listed our favorite picks, all for free or with a stipend. Go forth!

The Arts Writers Grant Program

The Creative Capital & Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant supports writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art through project-based grants issued directly to individual authors. The Arts Writers Grant Program issues awards for articles, blogs, books, new and alternative media, and short-form writing projects and aims to support the broad spectrum of writing on contemporary visual art, from general-audience criticism to academic scholarship.
Eyebeam Research Residency

The Research Residency at Eyebeam is for those who want the time and space to completely reinvent their practice. Residents pursue creative research and help Eyebeam redefine the meaning of technology. They receive 24/7 studio access, world-class mentorship, and generous financial support. This year, Eyebeam will offer five residencies to foster the research, analysis, and production of Power and its distribution.
Artist Residency Program at Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling
New York, New York

No Longer Empty partnered with Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling and Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance for the second annual Artist Residency Program at Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling. Applicants must reside in New York City and have experience working with children. Their practice should reflect a relationship and sensitivity to the demographics, neighborhood, and facets of Sugar Hill’s unique history. Residents will receive a 450 square-foot studio space and $7,000 honorarium.
Artist-in-Residence at Artspace
New Haven, CT

Artspace invites emerging and mid-career artists from all fields to apply for their one year Artist-in-Residence program. The Artist-in-Residence will have 24/7 access to a small private studio located in the back of Artspace that includes a 14′ x 9′ plywood-backed sheetrock wall, track lights, a slop sink, free wifi, access to Artspace’s kitchen, and additional secure storage. While this is not a living space and the program does not compensate room and board, we can help you find housing within the bustling community of working artists.

Alice Hayes Writing Fellowship
Lake Forest, IL

The Alice Judson Hayes Writing Fellowship is an annual award in memory of Alice Hayes, who created the Ragdale Foundation in what had been her family home. An 18- or 25-day residency and a $500 stipend will be awarded to a writer who is working on a project designed to bring awareness to a contemporary issue having to do with peace, social justice, education, or the environment. Projects can be nonfiction or fiction (including journalism, essays, memoir, script-writing, and creative nonfiction).
Open Museum—Education in Action
Warsaw, Poland

The Polin Museum Of The History of Polish Jews hosts Polish and foreign artists who deal with the themes of Jewish heritage and multiculturalism in their work. During three-week residencies, artists develop their own projects. The resulting works are displayed in the Museum and other spaces.

WCR Writing Fellowship
Soquel, CA
Deadline: May 6, 2016

The Wellstone Center in the Redwoods offers a  writing fellows many hours of solitude, either in the Library House—a book-filled cabin on the verge of the forest, with no electricity or running water, where the fellow resides—or a walk out on the center’s 4.7 acres of land, four miles up from the Pacific Ocean near Santa Cruz, California. There are daily common meals and weekly morning yoga.

Meerkat Media Residency
Brooklyn, New York
Deadline: May 9, 2016

This residency is the most active way to be involved in the Meerkat Media Collective. Residents are a dedicated group of Meerkats that are actively working on projects (individually or collaboratively) and are supported by the collective resources based in their work space in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Residents receive a monetary stipend ($1000, distributed in two $500 chunks across the year), have access to production and post-production equipment, and attend an annual (all expenses paid) creative retreat.
