To celebrate Creative Capital grantee Brittany Nelson’s solo show, The Year I Make Contact, at the Morgan Lehman gallery, CC artists, friends and staff gathered on February 10 for a special tour and Q&A with Nelson herself. Brittany gave us a peek into her photographic process, which is basically all of your high school science fair fantasies come true (also see: this Wired piece for a deep-dive into Nelson’s experimental methods). Events like this help grow our goal of supporting projects through each new phase of their development, and introducing new audiences to the work.
The Year I Make Contact is up through February 20 at Morgan Lehman. Hustle to see it if you haven’t already!

Last week, we continued our 15th Anniversary celebration with our Benefit and Auction. Nearly 200 guests came out to the gorgeous Studio 450 in Chelsea, which boasts stunning rooftop views. We were so lucky to have four incredible Creative Capital Awardees perform for our guests: Kristina Wong was our hilarious emcee; Daniel Bernard Roumain played an emotional tribute to Ruby Lerner and the impact of performing arts on his life; Sanford Biggers and his band Moon Medicin rocked the house with their performance and accompanying projection of Biggers’ video work; and Jace Clayton (DJ /rupture) provided the soundtrack for the rest of the night. It was a magical evening, and we couldn’t have done it without the generous support of our Benefit Chair, Paige West, and all the members of the Host and Benefit Committees. Continue reading

On February 5, LA Confidential Magazine hosted a party in honor of Creative Capital at Dirty Laundry. We were thrilled to have so many awardees, friends and supporters there to celebrate our Southern California community. Many thanks to LA Confidential for hosting, to Pernod-Ricard for supplying incredible drinks, to Ammo Cafe for delicious bites, and to Houston Hospitality / Dirty Laundry for the amazing space! Thank you to everyone who came out to our annual Benefit & Auction on May 14th—what a fantastic night! Special thanks to Daniel Roumain for an incredibly moving musical performance, and to artist Franco Mondini-Ruiz, who painted portraits of many of our guests. And of course, we are eternally grateful to our amazingly generous board member, Paige West, who hosted the event at her beautiful home in Tribeca. We’re already looking forward to next year’s festivities!

This weekend, we’re at PULSE NY (May 9-12) presenting our 2013 Auction Presale, featuring work by LaToya Ruby Frazier, Ken Gonzales-Day, Simone Leigh, Lisa Sigal, Kerry Skarbakka, Trimpin and other amazing Creative Capital grantees. The tree you see on the right side of the photos is Sam Van Aken’s Tree of 40 Fruit. Through a process of sculpting by way of grafting and pruning, Van Aken has created a group of trees that, when mature, will have the capacity to grow over 40 varieties of fruit. You can learn more his project and all the auction artworks at auction.creative-capital.org.
