New Residency Opportunities For Artists and Writers

Sometimes the resource you need to create is a good bout of uninterrupted time, which in our ceaseless schedules can become a luxury—costly and elusive. Residencies and grants reinvigorate neglected practices and can provide the final push for an ambitious project. We’ve scoped out some opportunities for artists and writers to find solitude and support all around the country. The deadlines are approaching soon! 

The Writers House Residencies
Spartanburg, SC
Deadline: June 1, 2016
The Writers House offers three residencies per year in an historic cottage in downtown Spartanburg, South Carolina. The program is open to emerging writers in the United States who have completed a college degree in creative writing within the past five years or are pursuing a graduate degree in writing. Residents receive lodging, utilities, and a stipend; they are responsible for their own transportation and meals. The residencies include a community service component of 15 weeks with the Hub City Writers Project, and offer a stipend of $150 a week.
Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise
Anywhere
Deadline: June 10, 2016

The Creative Promise Prizes honor young immigrants who have demonstrated exceptional achievement early in their careers. This year, three prizes will be awarded to visual artists, and each prize includes a $50,000 unrestricted cash award. All applicants must have been born abroad and be no older than 38 years old on December 31, 2016.

Vermont Studio Center Fellowship 
Johnson, VT
Deadline: June 15, 2016

Each month, VSC welcomes over 50 artists and writers to their historic campus in northern Vermont. All of their residencies include a private room in modest, shared housing, 24-hour access to a private studio space and 3 communal meals per day. The fellowship covers the full cost of a VSC residency.

Kala Fellowship Award
Berkeley, CA
Deadline: June 17, 2016

The Kala Fellowship award is an international competition open to artists from the U.S. and around the world. Artists producing innovative work in all mediums including printmaking, digital media, installation art, social practice, photography, and book arts are encouraged to apply. Kala will award eight artists a $3,000 stipend, unlimited access to Kala’s facilities for up to six months, one Kala class, and a culminating show in the Kala Gallery.
Headlands Center for the Arts Artists in Residence
Sausalito, CA

Deadline: June 3, 2016
The Artist in Residence (AIR) program awards fully sponsored residencies to approximately 45 local, national, and international artists each year. Residencies of four to eight weeks include studio space, chef-prepared meals, comfortable housing, and travel and living stipends. Artists selected for this program are at all stages in their careers and work in all media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and nonfiction writing, poetry, dance, music, interdisciplinary, social practice, and architecture.
Marfa Contemporary Artist in Resdience
Marfa, TX
Deadline: June 30, 2016

The Marfa Contemporary Artist in Residence program invites artists involved in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, performance-related media and other fine art media are eligible to apply for a residency. The residency is for a two-month period. Marfa Contemporary provides a furnished apartment and artist studio. A stipend of $1,100 per month is provided to assist with living expenses and art materials.
