We get it. Artists have to juggle side jobs, main jobs, parenting, commissions, renting studios and on top of all that are expected to fully engage in their practice. It seems impossible, but luckily there are some organizations like ours that have artists in mind. We’ve compiled a list of residencies that allow you time and space, and most are either free or offer stipends. Check them out below.

Residency Unlimited
Brooklyn, New York
Deadline: March 4, 2016
The selected New York artists will work from RU’s shared, multi-use workspace at 360 Court Street in Brooklyn. They will receive ongoing logistical and technical support from the RU staff for the successful realization of their project, and will be invited to participate in monthly field trips and workshops. There will be weekly curatorial studio visits to ensure them access to peers and creative feedback on their work.
Soaring Garden Artists Retreats
Laceyville, Pennsylvania
Deadline: March 10, 2016
Soaring Gardens has two locations about ten minutes apart; a house with a separate studio building and a converted church. They are located in diary country one hour west of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Depending on the nature of their work, the House can accommodate up to three working artists. The Church can accommodate two. Since the residents live closely together, this program encourage group applications—which are given priority.
Chashama
New York, NY
Deadline: March 14, 2016
Chashama has two new spaces for artists to activate: one in a former restaurant in West Midtown, Manhattan and the other in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The organization invites artists to submit new ideas for a potential project in either space by emailing a paragraph description to [email protected], as well as 1-2 images. Artists will then be contacted to submit a full proposal.
BAU Institute – Camargo Fellowship Residency
Cassis, France
Deadline: March 15, 2016
The BAU at Camargo residency provides Fellowships at no cost to visual artists, writers, composers, and other creative professionals who demonstrate a serious commitment to their craft and a desire to work independently within an international community. Fellows receive a live-work apartment at the Camargo Foundation at no cost.
Het Nieuwe Instituut
Rotterdam, Netherlands
Deadline: March 28, 2016
Alongside the institute’s exhibitions, lectures, publications and archives, the fellowship program will explore and challenge how research is conducted within an institutional context, pursuing alternatives to the expectation of predetermined outcomes, the use of official jargon, and the inertia power of the curriculum vitae. In the long term, the program is also intended to complement, reflect on, interact with and critique the ongoing activities of the institute. The fellowship provides 2,000 Euros per month, and a one-way travel expenses home after the conclusion of the residency.
Golden Apple Art Residency
Harrington, Maine

Golden Apple Art Residency is located approximately an hour north of Bar Harbor along the rocky coastal region of Downeast Maine. In this remote, naturally rugged and picturesque environment artists will find the support and inspiration to create. Located on the most eastern point in North America, the residency itself is situated on nearly fifty acres of spruce forest and overlooks the bay where lobster boats chug through the waters early each morning.
The Island – Resignified
Lefkada, Greece
Deadline: April 10, 2016
Theorists and practitioners from multiple disciplines (arts, sciences and social sciences) are invited to produce individual or collective works and to get involved with the local community of this Greek island. During the program, residents may elect to present their research, talk about their practice, run a seminar or a workshop relevant to their project, perform a show or lecture, or organize a conference.
Bogliasco Foundation
Bogliasco, Italy

The Bogliasco Foundation’s Study Center provides residential fellowships to gifted artists and scholars working on projects of any subject area in the following disciplines: Archaeology, Architecture/Landscape Architecture, Classics, Dance, Film/Video, History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Theater and the Visual Arts. During their month-long stay at the Center, Bogliasco Fellows are provided with living quarters, full board and a private studio.
The MacDowell Colony
Peterborough, New Hampshire
Deadline: April 15, 2016
The MacDowell Colony facilitates a balance between focused work and interdisciplinary interaction among composers, writers, architects, film and video artists, playwrights, interdisciplinary artists and visual artists. A MacDowell Fellowship, or residency, consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations and three prepared meals a day for up to eight weeks. There are no residency fees.
National Parks Arts Foundation
Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii

Park boundaries include the dormant lunar landcapes of Haleakalā as well as rain forests and waterfalls and pools leading down to Maui’s legendary coastlines. This is a unique, dramatic environment for all media to flourish and to inspire new breakthroughs in process and result. This Residency features: housing inside the Park on the Island of Maui, free use of the Wilderness Cabins in the park, and a venue for the artist’s public presentation.
Sitka Center/Artist and Ecologist Residency Program
Otis, Oregon
Deadline: April 30, 2016
The Sitka Center’s Residency Program has provided more than 200 visual artists, writers, musicians and natural science scholars the opportunity to conduct their work while deeply engaging with the inspirational coastal environment of Cascade Head. Up to five residents at a time, usually from different disciplines and stages in their careers, live and work on campus for up to 3 1/2 months free of charge.
Hotel Maria Kapel
Hoorn, Netherlands
Deadline: June 1, 2016
Once a year, HMK sends out an open call for artists and curators to hand in a proposal for a residency period. During a stay in their guesthouse, residents are invited to develop, execute and present new work in the chapel/exhibition space and/or elsewhere in Hoorn. The residency is open to artists and curators.
